Editorial Policy

1. Purpose

Afiwe is a community-led media platform celebrating African, Caribbean and Black British stories, voices, culture, heritage, creativity and lived experience.

Our editorial purpose is to create space for stories that may be overlooked, underrepresented or misunderstood, while maintaining high standards of accuracy, fairness, dignity and respect.

This policy sets out the principles that guide Afiwe’s print, digital, social media, interview, review, event and multimedia content.

2. Our Editorial Values

Afiwe aims to be:

  • Community-led – reflecting the voices, experiences and priorities of the communities we serve.
  • Inclusive – recognising diversity within African, Caribbean, Black British and wider communities.
  • Respectful – treating contributors, interviewees and subjects with dignity.
  • Accurate – taking reasonable steps to verify information before publication.
  • Independent – making editorial decisions based on relevance, public interest and editorial value rather than commercial or political pressure.
  • Constructive – creating space for dialogue, learning, challenge, celebration and positive change.
  • Authentic – protecting the voice and meaning of contributors wherever possible.

3. Editorial Independence

Afiwe retains editorial control over all content published under the Afiwe name.

Partners, advertisers, sponsors, funders, contributors and organisations featured within Afiwe do not automatically have the right to determine editorial content, wording, headlines, conclusions or publication decisions.

Funding, advertising or partnership arrangements will not guarantee favourable editorial coverage.

Where appropriate, Afiwe may consult contributors or organisations to check factual accuracy, but final editorial decisions remain with Afiwe.
